Thanjavur, formerly Tanjore,is a city which is the headquarters of the Thanjavur District the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Scholars believe the name Thanjavur is derived from Tanjan, a legendary demon in Hindu mythology. While the early history of Thanjavur remains unclear, the city first rose to prominence during the reign of Medieval Chola, when it served as the capital of the empire. After the fall of Cholas, the city was ruled by various dynasties like Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Thanjavur Nayaks, Thanjavur Marathas and the British Empire.
BRIHADEESWARAR TEMPLE
The Peruvudaiyar Kovil, also known as Thanjavur Periya Kovil, Brihadeeswara Temple, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajeswaram, at Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is aHindu temple dedicated to Shiva. THANJAI MAMANI TEMPLE
Thanjai Mamani Koil is a set of three Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Thanjavur, Tamilnadu, India and are close to each other. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. Unlike other Divyadesams where a single shrine is referred, this set of temples is referred together in all the paasurams(poems).
THANJAVUR PALACE
Not far from the temple and in the heart of the old tower lies the palace with vast labyrinthian buildings, enormous corridors, bit halls, watch-towers, moat, fort and courtyards. The palace was built by the Nayak rulers around 1550 A.D. and subsequently renovated and enlarged by the Maratha rulers of Thanjavur. Though a portion is in ruins, much of it is still in its original beauty. Some government offices are located inside besides an art gallery, a library, the hall of music, the audience hall and even today in a portion lives the present legal heirs of the ThanjavurMarathas.The entrance of the palace has a large quadrangular courtyard.
